Updated November 25, 2022

On 7 Feb 1797, David GILLIAM, receives a grant for 460 acres on some of the waters of Holloday River and south side of the Buckingham Road, adjoining Joseph Brown, William Morriss, Crouches, Richard GILLIAM, James Walker, David McCormack and Olive Branch.
Land Office Grants No. 39, 1797-1798, p. 135; Reel 105.
[From the adjoining lines, it is apparent David GILLIAM lived adjacent to Richard GILLIAM, son of Epaphroditus GILLIAM, who according to the Buckingham Surveyor’s Plat Book on 13 Mar 1795 owned 413 3/4 acres on the branches Slate River; joining William Morris Sr., Olive Branch, Robert Smith and John Webb. Richard H. GILLIAM’s Bible includes a death record for David McCormick]

David GILLIAM paid taxes in Buckingham from 1801 to 1802.
In 1801 David GILLIAM purchased 400 acres of New Grant.
[Cannot locate grant]

John GILLIAM, son of David, paid taxes in Buckingham from 1815 to 1834. From 1835 to 1840, John GILLIAM, son of David appears as John David GILLIAM. In 1835, John David GILLIAM, son of David, is referred to as John David GILLIAM, Sr.
In 1814, John GILLIAM, S. D., owns 110 acres on Buck and Doe Creek
[Does S. D. stand for son of David? In the 1800 Personal Property Taxes there is an entry for John GILLIAM followed by son of Dite which appears to refer to Epaphroditus GILLIAM.]

In 1818, John GILLIAM, son of David, purchased 30 acres from John Hooper.
In 1819, John GILLIAM, son of David, 333.5 acres on Buck and Doe Creek from John Hooper.
In 1822 to 1823, Littleberry GILLIAM paid taxes in Buckingham.
In 1822 Littleberry GILLIAM purchased 148 acres on Buck and Doe Creek from his father, John GILLIAM, son of David.
In 1829 John GILLIAM, son of David, and R. J. Davis purchased 40 acres on Buck and Doe Creek from James M. Anderson, trustee for Dunnivant.
[From below, Dunnivant is Pemberton Dunnivant.]

In 1829, a Mr. GILLIAM purchased 148 acres from Pemberton Dunnivant, sold by J. M. A. trustee.
[Apparently this Mr. GILLIAM is John D. GILLIAM, son of David, and J. M. A. is James M. Anderson.]

In 1836, John GILLIAM, son of David, who owned 140 acres with Richard J. Davis, is listed as John D. GILLIAM.
William GILLIAM, paid taxes in Buckingham from 1837 to 1840.
In 1837 William GILLIAM purchased 105.75 acres on the Willis River from the estate of J. D. GILLIAM’s [Sr?].
In 1837, John D. GILLIAM [Jr?] purchased 105.75 acres from estate of J. D. GILLIAM, deceased.
In 1837, John D. GILLIAM purchased 197 and 5/8 acres on Slate River from Bernard Hill.
In 1838, John D. GILLIAM purchased 184 acres adjacent Slate River from William B. Moseley.
In 1838 William GILLIAM purchased 150 acres adjacent J. D. GILLIAM [Sr?] estate, from J. D. GILLIAM, [Jr?]
John D. GILLIAM [Jr?] paid taxes in Buckingham from 1841 to 1847.
John D. GILLIAM [Jr?] estate is settled over several years (1848-1861).
In 1843 John D. GILLIAM [Jr?] sold 77 acres and 72 poles to Aaron Flood
[In 1850, an Aaron Flood—there were three in Buckingham, is listed in adjacent to the household to John J. GILLIAM and three households away from James Via. James Via’s household contains himself, age 33, Martha Via, age 45, William GILLIAM, age 18, Richard GILLIAM, age 15, John N. GILLIAM, age 12, Robert GILLIAM, age 8, and Sally Davis, age 37. This Sally appears to be the Sally living with Richard H. GILLIAM in 1860, age 45]

In 1844 John D. GILLIAM [Jr?] sold 80 acres on Molleys Creek to Philip A. Bolling
[Philip Bolling, lawyer, is found in the 1850 Cumberland County Census]

In 1844 John D. GILLIAM [Jr?] purchased 220 acres on Buck and Doe Creek
In 1853 Mr. Bocock, Commissioner, sold 220 acres on Buck and Doe Creek to R. J. Davis
[Likely Mr. Nicholas F. Bocock, lawyer, living with Richard H. GILLIAM, hotel keep in 1850]

In 1861, apparently John D. GILLIAM’s [Jr?] estate sold 304 acres to Richard H. GILLIAM
[In the 1860 Buckingham Census Richard H. GILLIAM has living with him Sallie Davis, age 45 and William, age 19].

In 1861, Richard H. GILLIAM purchased 356 acres on the Slate River from Richard S. GILLIAM, subject to the dower interest of John D. GILLIAM’s [Jr?] widow.
[Richard S. GILLIAM in 1861, purchased 354 acres on the Slate River adjacent to David W. Glover from William M. GILLIAM, Commissioner.]
